What is a "session"?

Irish traditional music sessions are mostly informal gatherings at which people play Irish traditional music. The Irish language word for "session" is seisiún. A "session" can also refer to a singing session or a mixed session (tunes and songs).

Can anyone participate?

It depends on the session. It is considered polite when first visiting a session to wait to be invited to play, if you are not an expert player. If you walk into a session with an instrument in a case, the musicians will notice, even if you don't think they do. Strike up a conversation with one of the musicians between tunes. (If you're a beginner in a new area, asking after teachers is a good way to start.) Nine times out of ten, you'll be invited to play a tune or two. There is usually someone who "runs" the session or makes sure it starts and ends on time. This is the person that will invite you to play.

If you're new to the area, it's recommended to listen to the session the first couple times you go before joining in, as well. This will give you a chance to get a feel for the group of people and the types of tunes commonly played.

If you're just visiting, ask your friends to introduce you via email (or Facebook!) to someone who attends the session. This kind of introduction will speed up the process for you so you can sit down and get to playing!

Can anyone listen?

Absolutely! We love having folks listen and enjoy the music! Feel free to ask questions, too!
